Opening Up and Connecting Spaces

Despite plenty of square footage, the homeowners found that they were not using the living room and felt cramped and isolated when in the dining room and kitchen in this 1970s ranch home. Also, like may people, they had inherited furniture that had sentimental value, but that was not totally functional or reflective of their style. The bathrooms were not as well appointed at the rest of the home, and the pink tile had worn out its welcome.

We were able to open up the living room to the dining room by removing an unused fireplace and minimizing the chimney vent for the fireplace in the daylight basement. The wall between the kitchen and the dining room was opened up and a serving area created on the half wall between them. These changes connected all three spaces visually and expanded the area that could be used for dining. An added benefit was a new view from the kitchen to the expansive backyard. A few inherited pieces of furniture now mix with newer furniture that was selected to create functional seating areas that better reflect the homeowners' style.

In updating the kitchen, many of the cabinets and appliances were kept and new cabinet faces and counters added. Not a fan of grout lines, the homeowners chose large cement-like tiles for the counters with thin medium gray grout that all but disappears.

In the main bathroom the tub was replaced with one of the common updates these days, a walk-in tile shower. The earth tones and the river stone floor echoes the couple's love of the outdoors. A glass shower door and an expanded vanity counter also opens up the space.

Kaya Construction were the general contractors and helped make this extensive remodel as smooth, satisfying and green as possible.

"We absolutely LOVE the remodel and are enjoying it more each day. The kitchen and dining room changes make entertaining so much more enjoyable. I can't say enough how much more we enjoy being in the house. If we had to do this all over again, we wouldn't change a thing."
