Better Flow and Function

This 1929 home in the Woodstock neighborhood has a lot of the original charm along with some awkwardness in the kitchen that had been updated piecemeal over the years. The layout of appliances, counters and sotrage was inconvenient, and the cabinet drawers were troublesome to use. The client wanted to make maintain the informal feel, but improve the functionality and enhance the beauty of the space. She also wanted to make the most modest changes she could and use the greenest materials possible.

A better appliance configuration was achieved with by using a 24" x 24" Conserve ultra-efficient refrigerator, moving the dishwasher next to the sink and dish cabinets, and creating counter space and storage on either side of the stove.

The new cabinets were made by Earthbound Industries using salvaged fir fronts and the quality of the craftsmanship and materials radiates a glow throughout the room. The counters were finished with recycled-content tile from Terra Green Tiles. The client was able to find the "new" kitchen sink and range hood at the Rebuilding Center for a few of dollars each. A new linoleum floor and non-VOC paint on the walls completed the update. We particularly like how the client's material choices reflect her passion for rivers, from the choice of colors throughout to details like the rippled glass tile and drawer handles.

" I knew that I wanted a functional kitchen built with environmentally-friendly materials, but I didn't know enough about available options to even begin creating a new design. Finding and working with Living Spaces was a wonderful experience that saved me countless hours of frustration and resulted in the perfect kitchen for my home size and style. Eric and Beth took the time to listen to my preferences and vision and provide me with various options to fit my lifestyle. Their commitment to sustainable living is evident in the product research they have conducted and the solid guidance they provide. Throughout the process, they made themselves readily available to answer questions and helped to keep my expectations regarding the timeline and budget grounded. Maybe it's just me, but things seem to taste better in my new kitchen. Or, maybe cooking is now much more enjoyable. Now, if only they were available to help me decide what to make for dinner... "
