Living Spaces: Green Home Remodeling Design and Coaching

Green Home Design Services

Customized Services

We offer you service that is tailored to meet your needs—nothing more and nothing less. Generally we begin with a free in-home meeting with you to discuss your situation and get a holistic sense of the possibilities and priorities. Based on this we can offer a written proposal outlining the different ways we can help you and the number of hours we think it will take. Sometimes one or two hours of consultation can make all the difference, and sometimes a full design process with architectural plans may be necessary.

For specific issues such as evaluating a potential house purchase, giving a second opinion on a design solution, or walking through your home with a builder to get ball park prices for project costs, we are available to meet with you and begin work right away.

Design

floor plan

We specialize in space planning and small space design, helping people fit well into their homes. Our approach takes into consideration the many facets of your lifestyle and home to create designs that meet your needs for function, beauty and affordability. In addition, we are committed to creating designs that are resource efficient, socially responsible, and healthy for you and the environment.

We can produce architectural drawings for construction and permits as needed. Our computer program offers 3-D views of spaces which can help you to visualize changes.

Coaching

We can help you with the complex decision making process that is an on-going aspect of living greener and of remodeling projects. We can work with you to identify your goals, priorities, resources and create any documents that are necessary for you to track your process. Changing behavior is sometimes part of the process as well, and we work with people to make these kinds of changes—from de-cluttering to composting and many things in between. We are available for this kind of coaching early in your planning and throughout your remodel as on-going support.

Education

While there is lots of great information available about how to green your home and your life, it can be overwhelming and confusing to sort through. We seek to give you the best quality information you need to make decisions that align with your values and goals. We are knowledgeable about green materials and sources, building techniques, contractors, and other local resources.

In addition, we have developed educational curricula and articles on sustainability and green building and have presented workshops and classes on these topics.

Rates

Our goal is to offer our clients the most creative, practical and cost effective design solutions. We find that working as a team best accomplishes this goal, and we bill our combined experience and skills at $100/hour. Moreover, in light of our commitment to helping people lower their ecological footprint while improving the quality of their life, we offer a 10% discount to clients whose projects reduce a household's ecological footprint.

In most cases we are able to give an estimate of the hours we expect a given task or project to take.

In addition we each consult separately on our individual areas of expertise at $60/hr. Rates for educational services and unusual projects are determined case by case.

Testimonials

" Beth and Eric have already saved me many times their fee in just the first few meetings on my green remodeling project. They are knowledgeable about a wide array of issues, easy and pleasant to work with, and extremely flexible in letting me do what I can while being available to do the things I am clueless about. "
- Jeanne Longley PhD, Zero Waste Alliance

" Everytime I tell a friend or colleague about the services provided by Beth Meredith and Eric Storm of Living Spaces, they say 'That's exactly what I need. How do I get ahold of them?' They specialize in helping you figure out what sort of remodeling will work best in your home, identifying the best sources of materials and supplies, designing and costing out the project, and even putting you in touch with potential contractors to do the job. This may seem like a luxury, but the time, money and hassle saved by letting Beth and Eric's fingers do the walking is unbelievable. I particularly appreciate the fact that Beth and Eric quickly figure out your tastes and preferences, and then act on your behalf to help make it all happen. On top of that they are constantly thinking about what's good for the planet. "
- Steven Ames, Portland, Oregon

" Hiring Beth and Eric to help with my kitchen and bath remodel was a great decision. They made the whole process so much easier. In particular, I was very happy with the help I received selecting countertop, backsplash, and shower tile and with the ideas they contributed towards reconfiguring the kitchen. The computer drawings they supplied the contractor ensured that I received the design that I wanted, and the list of selected materials and available suppliers they provided me made the purchasing process fairly painless. It was a real pleasure working with Beth and Eric, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their services to a friend or hire them again for future projects. "

" Thanks for saving us a ton of time, money and frustration, just from attending one intro class! We have spent a lot of time thinking about the things you brought up and have found much less invasive and yet more productive things to do to our property, and leave room for a native woodland edible garden. I have even figured out how to have the kitchen I really want just by taking out the top half of one wall, move the fridge and paint the cupboards. I am so glad we took your class. This is going to be a zillion times easier than the big plans I had and be better for the planet! "
- Irene Frost, Mount Tabor, SE Portland

" Living Spaces helped us design our remodeling project. They worked carefully and conscientiously to discover what we truly wanted our home to be and, despite what we initially told them, what we wanted the end product to be like. They also helped us identify green products to use in our remodel, brought us samples of different materials to consider, made us aware of the costs of different options and helped us select a building contractor to implement the plan. They did all the drawings required for the permits and went so far as to take the plans to Washington County to be sure they had everything needed before we went to apply for the permits.
We simply could not have asked for a more conscientious team. Beth and Eric were consistently good listeners, provided multiple options on every design point, and brought plenty of ideas and options we had never considered to light. We are really happy with the design we decided on and are now implementing and are considering enlisting their services again to help with the interior decor after the remodeling. "

" Beth and Eric came to our rescue when we were contemplating multiple remodeling projects and didn't really know where to begin or how to prioritize. We also needed help with design choices and figuring out how do our remodel in a sustainable manner. And, we were overwhelmed in trying to find a contractor. Beth and Eric worked with us to come up with a bathroom design that would function well in a challenging space. They gave us referrals to two great contractors, one of whom we selected and he was outstanding. Beth and Eric continued to be on call throughout the project with advice and assistance. Their calm demeanor, good humor, and desire to help us get through the process were wonderful. They are a delight to work with and more than earned their fees. They were instrumental to the success of the entire project and we'd recommend them with out hesitation to anyone needing help with their remodel. "
